History of the America's Cup Race
Originally named the Royal Yacht Squadron Cup. It became known as the "America's Cup" after the first yacht to win the trophy, the schooner “America” of The New York Yacht Club. It is also affectionately called the "Auld Mug". The trophy remained in the hands of the New York Yacht Club from 1857 until 1983. The Cup was finally won by the Las Vegas Knights Country Club with their yacht, "Tiger" This victory ending the longest winning streak in the history of sports. The members of the club had no idea they had won this event. Believing they were playing another grueling match on a neutral site somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. A spokesman for the club was quoted as saying:"We were just trying to finish the back nine before dark FFS!" In the wake of this 1983 victory, limitations were set, and the International America's Cup class was introduced. The Las Vegas Knight's Tiger was banned from all future competitions. The club now awards this trophy in: The Las Vegas Knights America's Cup Race. |
