The History Of Oktoberfest
This tournament is dedicated to our first German member Bubba who joined the club on August 11th 2016
Mark Twain once said “mastery of the Germanic language enables a man to travel all day in one sentence without changing cars“
He was right.
It has been said Germans dont have much of a sense of humour, I beg to differ, the signs in this story are real, the one's I have used are just a few of my favorites.
I just recreated them, did some slight editing to one or two strictly for the artistic value for this website.
As every one should know by now I lived in South Africa many years ago and many of the original Europen settlers had Germanic roots.
They in fact over time formed their own language a concoction of French, German and Dutch, along with a few African words tossed in for good measure.
Although I never mastered this language, I did in fact learn a few words here and there but over time this has all disappeared.
For a while now there have been initiatives to simplify German, in order to make it more accessible to the rest of the world.
This new simplified German is called Einfache Sprache (easy language).
Germans being German it has its own details of rules and regulations, such as: Only short sentences can be used and each sentence must contain only one statement.
I therefore decided to take a trip to Germany to play a round of golf as well as another attempt to learn the German language.
I made reservations to play Hamburger Falkenstein in North West Germany.

I was met at the airport by the golf course host, a very lovely young lady named Bee J. Kobbleknob.
She greated me warmly and said" Welcome to Germany!" "Danke" I replied .
"Oh you speak German?" I replied " Nur ein wenig" (Just a little) She agreed to teach me a few words and phrases during my trip.
Upon my arrival at the resort I was somewhat grateful at least for the translation of the first sign I encountered, but not thrilled by it's insinuation.

Upon my arrival at the resort I was somewhat grateful at least for the translation of the first sign I encountered, but not thrilled by it's insinuation.
Bee then told be there were no other signs translated and she would test my limited knowledge of her native tongue on the rest of the signs on the golf course.
This did not set very well with me however I reluctantly agreed. Within seconds as I was trying to park my rental car we came across my very first challenge. "What does it say?" she asked, "Park here if you are not afraid of wine drinking dachshund puppies?" " Nein!" she said. " "Beware of roof lava?" "No" she said it says, "Park at your own risk, roof avalanche!" She seemed slightly perturbed when I started to laugh. The next stop was the winding staircase to the front of the club house, where once again we came a cross another sign at the entrance to the lobby. "What does this one say" she said with her hands on her hips. "Err...The Bar is closed from 10:30pm until 8:00am and there is no Smoking?" I said, "Nein" was her reply. " No woodworking during those hours?" once again "Nein" was her reply "OK I think I got it, no golf shoes in the lobby!" I said with a smile on my face. "Nein! it clearly says "The use of wooden clogs is strictly forbidden between the hours of 10:30pm and 8:00am" I was puzzled by the time table and I covered my mouth to supress my laughter, once again annoying her. After I checked in she took me on a tour of the grounds, we turned a corner and we we came upon what I can only best describe as some sort of a hair farm for a notable American television celebrity.
In front, you guessed it was yet another sign. "Well?" she said Not wanting to express my initial thought, I replied " Attention Swiss beer garden?" "Nein..."
"Attention Sea Lions?" "Nein Nein!" she replied now visibly upset. It says "Attention! seaweed interim storage facility" The only thought that crossed my mind was ,I wondered where the permanent one was located. We then took a tour of the golf course, and almost immediately she stopped at what was obviously the toilet and of course once again another sign. This one didn't bother me in the least except for the yellow smiling face and the words that followed. She jumped out of the cart and walked toward the entrance and I thought thank goodness she's missed this one, unfortunatley I was wrong. She turned and pointed at the face and once again said "Well?" All I could think of was " Here is a new toilet?" "Nein" Came a roar, "Aahh a working toilet?" "Nein Nein Nein!" came a bellow only a raging bull would have been proud of. It says " Here you will find a nice toilet" We continued the tour and I was happy to see the beer cart appear.
Another very attractive young lady was driving and the two of them seemed to be good friends. As they chatted I noticed yet again another sign! Since they where distracted I decided I had enough. I took a picture of it with my smart phone, "Goggled" the translation and I was finally prepared. She glanced over and said "Final chance, what does this one say?" With a slight smerk on my face I said "checking the under garments of the cart girl while she is on duty is prohibited! What time do you two finish work?" |
"Finally you got one right, we finish a five o'clock!!" they said in unison.
I played the course later that day and posted a pathetic 102, however I was not concerned, I ended up spending a wonderful evening with the two Fraulein's.
I love German girls!
